The Loch Lomond Forest Co-op’s shareholders has asked you, the forest planner, to assess how the following global trends may affect their forest:
- Science and technology.
- Economics and international competition
- Forest certification
- Climate change
1. Assess the current state of these trends and write a 4 page report on the effect they may have on the Loch Lomond Forest (Ecologically, Socially and Economically) and your recommended management actions.
Capstone Project
This is the culminating assignment for the entire standard (also known
as a Capstone Project) which builds off of all the knowledge gained throughout the modules in the Forest Management Standard (and potentially other standards).
Your task is to develop a Resource Plan for the Loch Lomond Forest. You will use the forest planning framework laid out in Lesson 2.1 ‘The Planning Process’. You will also use the Loch Lomond Forest model developed in Module 3. The plan should address any Provincial or Federal requirements identified in the culminating assignment for Module 4. Please incorporate the management approach and monitoring plan you completed in Module 5. The plan should also incorporate the global trends response plan you developed in Module 6. The plan should be 20-30 pages and include the following components:
- Information Provided:
- GIS data
- Loch Lomond Forest Introduction
- Use the following planning process (outlined in Lesson 2.1)
- Plan document will need to include the following sections (as outlined in Lesson 2.1)
Resource Plan must include the following:
- Produce tables showing resource abundance over time.
- Create maps identifying the forest area and harvest areas for the first year (including existing and new roads).
- Describe the management activities required to provide for a sustainable supply of consumptive and non-consumptive goods and services.
- Discuss your indicators of sustainability and criterion for assessment.
- Discuss how sustained yield was achieved and how this is going to be implemented in the plan.
Pick one of the following business plans and analyze how effectively it addresses the elements of a good business plan addressed in Module 1, including the financial plan and the marketing plan.

When you have completed the assessment, write an evaluation of your entrepreneurial traits, as motivations, aptitudes and attitudes.
Develop a five-year plan for strengthening your entrepreneurial traits.

Assignment 1: Strategic Management Process
Internal Analysis—Case Study. Pick a company to analyze.
- Identify whether your company has a competitive advantage or disadvantage in its primary industry.
- Evaluate your company against the four generic building blocks of competitive advantage.
- What are the distinctive competencies of your company?
- What role have prior strategies played in shaping the distinctive competencies of your company? How about luck?
- Do the strategies currently pursued by your company build on its distinctive competencies? Are they an attempt to build new competencies?
- What are the barriers to imitating the distinctive competencies of your company?
This assignment is worth 25%.
Conduct a risk analysis for a 100,000 hectare forest estate using Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources & Forestry methods as outlined in Integrating Risk in MNR: Management: Risk
Management How to Guide.
Assignment 2: The Value of Forest Certification
Considering the lecture and readings for this lesson, write a three-page opinion piece on the value of forest certification in achieving sustainable forest management in Canada.

Pick a forest policy that interests you. Check to make sure there is enough material on line to give you a sense of the different actors involved in the policy. Write a 3-page, double-spaced essay describing how at least three actor groups influenced the final policy.
